Section 3 – Intentional Triggering

All Suffering Is The Result Of Being Triggered

Emotional, psychological and even physical conditioning results in what is called unconscious patterns of response. These reactions to thoughts and circumstances are completely outside of our control.

But they don’t have to remain that way.

It is not that you get to control them. You don’t. You never get control of the autonomic nervous system, and that is a really good thing.

(Imagine having to consciously beat your heart or digest your food.)

The pattern of response was put into place by events that happened a log time ago. The response was absolutely appropriate and necessary at the time. But it has outlived its usefulness and it is time for the nervous system to release it.

In order to do that we have to demonstrate to the nervous system that the danger that created the response pattern in the first place is no longer present.

We do that by purposely triggering the reactive pattern and then allowing the system to deal with it. Rather that immediately moving away from it, we move closer to it. By keeping yourself there in the discomfort you gradually demonstrate to the nervous system that the danger is no longer present.

Believe me, your nervous system does not want to hold onto this posture any longer than it has to and so, the moment it is convinced that it is no longer need, it drops it like a hot potato.

So you don’t have to do anything really except be willing to demonstrate that the danger is past and so the defensive behavior is no longer needed. The system will do the rest.
